A young boy was taken to school by his mother. On his way, he saw a calf being taken forcefully to the slaughterhouse. The calf was crying and resisting with all his might going towards the slaughterhouse.
The boy asked his mother,
Why is this calf crying so much?
"They are taking him to the slaughterhouse for killing him." Replied the mother.
"Oh! I thought that he is being taken to school" said the boy surprisingly.
For the boy, there was nothing more dreading than going to the school. Every day he used to cry while taken to school. He hated going to school more than anything else in this world.
Yet there are many children who love to go to school. School is a place where they make friends, play lot of games and have a good time. Some of them may even prefer going to school than to stay home.
While many people hate school as they hate reading and studies, there are many who love the same acts. There are millions of non-academic books published every day, which are bought by the book-lovers after spending their hard earned money. They find reading relaxing and enjoying and preferable to any other sport. Yet the same books may be hated by others who would not like to read these books even if they are paid a good amount of money to do so.
What makes the same act, so enjoyable for some people while detestable for others?
The answer is love.
The Magic of Love
We all love to do many things in our lives like watching our favourite TV program, sports, playing games, reading our favourite book, listening to music, playing with our children, flirting, making love, traveling to beautiful places, meeting beautiful people and so on. We all crave for a life where we can spend all our time in doing something that we really love. When we do something that we love, we instead of feeling tired feel relaxed and rejuvenated.
Yet most of us end up doing things that we just don't like and often hate doing. We still keep on doing such things as we have to earn money so that we can buy things and make people happy whom we love.
Yet if we just think for a while, we may notice that there is nothing so great about anything that we love so much. The same acts may be hated by some people. The same game which you may love so much can be hated by another person. How many people would like to run and jog in the morning? How many people would like to read books in their spare time? Many people would find playing with children extremely childish and boring. No wonder, all acts which are so pleasant to one person may be quite tiresome for other as they simply can't love those.
What is Love?
Love is impossible to define in words but easiest to understand as an emotion. The simplest understanding of love is that while in love, the people in love are like two bodies and one soul.
How is it possible to have one soul and two bodies?
What does this statement mean in reality?
Two bodies- one soul means that both person share common feelings and emotions. Since feelings are relating to soul, hence we say the soul is common. If one is hurt, other gets hurt. If one happy, the other feels happy.
In more practical term it means that when people are in love they get happiness in the happiness of others and feel pain when their loved one is in distress.
Thus the identity of a person is increased when in love.
A person may be in love with many people as he does get influenced by the emotions of others. He loves his parents, children, spouse, lover, friends, countryman etc.
You do feel pain when your lover is in trouble. You also feel pained when you see pain in the eyes of an unknown person and even in the eyes of an animal.
However, the realization of the feeling of pain is different for each person.
When you love a person most, you may love him or her more than your own self. It is not uncommon to find people who give their life for the protection of their children or their lovers as they love them more than their self. The story of "Titanic" was not a figment of imagination but it has a certain truth in it.
People can really give their life to protect the life of the person they love.
The Expansion of Soul
When a man is born as a child, he is alone in this world. However, as he grows in this world, he soon start feeling attached with many people as his self (soul) starts expanding.
Every man has a natural tendency to expand himself in his life. There is no limit to this expansion and every man desires to expand so much that he become one with the universe , i.e. his soul become one with the soul of the universe (which is called in Indian scriptures as God, Paramatma or Universal Soul).
Yet most people fail to grow steadily in their life as they become gradually selfish with the passage of years. A child who plays with his toys and love animal in the films, gradually become indifferent to them as his love is killed in the quest of sensual pleasure.
While soul is spiritual and can expand in the entire universe, the body is always confined in the time and space. Hence all the pleasures of the body has to be limited to the physical objects and the material objects are limited in this world.
Thus people instead of sharing the pain and pleasure of each other, learn to maximize their own pleasure while minimizing their pain. Since there is too much pain in this world, a lover of humanity has to suffer lots of pain due to his love for the humanity.
What if one can get pleasure and happiness by the pain of others?
One method to achieve this objective is by development of emotion of hate.
Hate: When Pain Becomes Pleasure
Hate is opposite of love.
While in love, a person feels happy if his lover is happy, a person who hates another person feel happier when his enemy is in pain. One also feels unhappy, if his enemy is happy.
The emotion of hate is virtually absent in the child. However, it grows at its peak by the time one gets an adult.
The reason is that every child is taught from the beginning that only way to feel happy is to defeat others.
Happiness at the cost of the defeat or pain of others is the main philosophy of competition.
The modern world has grown on the edifice of competition which is based on the philosophy of the survival of the fittest. Thus only one person is victorious in a competition while all others are losers.
The only way to keep you happy in the modern world is by defeating others.
Thus in the era of competition, love is replaced by hate as only hate can motivate person to defeat others and let a person rejoice the defeat of a fellow human being.
Hate, however, stops the growth of the self and the ambit of soul gets shrunk to the his own. For such a person, even love become a method to satisfy his lust and passion rather than sharing the feelings and emotions. If his lust is not fulfilled, he develops hatred for the other person.
Since there is no reason why any other person should work for the satisfaction of his passion, he gradually becomes enemy of most people and develop hatred for the world.
The Secret of Loving Your Job
The time of most people is occupied by their job. It is perhaps for this reason that job is also called occupation today. Most of the people don't like their job, yet they do it for the sake of money which they use to buy the things they love to have.
How does the love of people related to the love of the job?
Why does one hate his job?
Can such a person love another job?
The fundamental truth is that every job ultimately deals with people. If, people are not involved, you can always use computers to do the job.
If you make a list of the jobs or activities which you love to do and which makes you happy and relaxing, these are the activities where you deal with the people you love. For example, playing with your children is a fun because you love them. Imagine that you hate your children for some reason; you will simply hate the same activity.
You love reading your favourite fiction, because you love the characters of the book and enjoy their company. Playing is also a fun when you play with your friend.
Similarly, if you do not love people, meeting them would be a painful experience.
Every person in his job has to deal with number of people. The list includes, bosses, colleagues, subordinates, customers, vendors etc.
If you love them, you are bound to love your job as your job gives you opportunity to meet so many people who would otherwise would not meet you. It gives an opportunity to help them by solving their problem and making them happy. Thus for a loving person, the job gives them tremendous happiness as only by doing their job they can make so many people happy and thereby enhance their own happiness as his soul has enlarged to include their soul in it.
If a person hates the world, he is in a fix. He does not feel happy by making others happy. As a matter of fact, he feels unhappy if others feel happy. So he has no interest in making others happy. Such a person just discharges his duties mechanically without any desire to make others happy as due to his imitation of soul, he can not enjoy the happiness of other people.
Yet every profession requires that you make your boss, colleagues and all people whom you deal with happy and satisfied. Thus there is no way that a non-loving person can make himself happy by making his customers and other people happy. He always feels miserable, as there is no way, he can ever hope to enjoy his work and also feel happy. They seem to be contradictory to each other.
Thus he always dreams of enjoying life in the company of people whom he loves. Most often, such person are those who are dependent on him for example his wife, children, relatives.
Thus for a person who loves very few people, he has very few opportunities to feel happy. The more you love people, the more you expand your soul and the more you love your job or the more jobs you start loving.
Simple Steps To Create Love
Most people find it impossible to love more people as they find the world full of evil people.
This is true also as every person has both good and evil in him or her. The good and evil are like positive and negative charged protons and electrons in an atom, which are always present in an atom in equal numbers.
Thus every person has evil as well as good in him and both qualities are present in equal numbers.
If you have hatred in your heart, you can only see evil side in every person. However, if you are filled with love, you would be able to see all good things in the same person.
Thus one has to change himself to see love in the same world and in the same people.
One method to start is to see evil in you. A famous Sufi poet Kabir has described this method in the following words,
I went to see Evil in the world,
I found Evil in None,
When I looked into my Heart,
I found None more Evil than Me
Searching evil in you is the first step to love people. Only when you find evil in you, you stop hating these evils. People may hate excreta of other people but are they not filled with the same thing.
Do they no clean their own excreta everyday?
You may hate greed, anger, lust, passion in other people yet everyone has these things present in them.
One you identify your evils in yourself, you have to remove them. Yet, however, hard you try; there is no way you can ever get free of these evil thoughts and emotions. Yet in the battle to get rid of your self from these evil, you reduce them considerably.
This changes you as a person free of evil can not see evil in others. He can only see with the eyes of love and find goodness in all people.
Love makes all things possible.
The first benefit is that one start enjoying everything that he does as in every act of a person can extend his soul and his love to this world.
When You Start Loving Your Job
To a person, who has filled himself with love by removing hatred from his heart, all work become enjoyable? The reason is not the work or the world but the transformation of the person. Once the person has extended his self to more and more people in the world, his pleasure too increases as all jobs give him not only satisfaction and also happiness. Thus you can have your cake and eat it too.
