Monster Careers: Networking - A Friendly Book on Networking for Job Seekers

3D COMPUTER ANIMATION :

Jeff Taylor "wrote the book" on using the internet to help job seekers when he created Monster.com as one of the very first dot com companies. Now, along with Doug Hardy, also from Monster.com, he has written an actual book on using networking in a job search. For job seekers and other career builders, the years of experience that both men bring to the table shine through. Neither one of them have spent their time exclusively behind a computer screen.

Networking for job seekers is one of the most important job search tools available. I found the book to be thorough and easy to read. There were three sections that were most interesting and helpful to me. The authors create a formula for developing a personal brand statement that will help people help you find a job. A personal brand statement isn't a request to find a job. It's a way to teach people about your skills and accomplishments. And it gives them a clear idea of what kind of job you are looking for.

The second part that I found most interesting was actually borrowed from my friend and admired author Bob Burg's book "Endless Referrals." Called the White Pages and Yellow Pages strategy, it helps jog your memory to recall the maximum number of people whom you know. Unless you've been keeping careful track all along, there are dozens and maybe hundreds of people whom you know. Could you recall all of them at need?

The final technique that I found most useful was the description of the informational interview which I think is one of the most powerful job search techniques you have. The authors clearly describe what it is and how to describe it. I would have liked to have seen an example of how to make the phone call to set one up.

There is one small part of the book that I do find that a little confusing and not as helpful as the rest of the information. There is a description of four kinds of networking styles using animal analogies. I wasn't able to keep them straight in my mind based on their different descriptions. Still, everyone will be able to relate to the stories related to the styles.

Overall this is a very helpful book for anyone involved in a job search or who knows a job seeker. Take the time to not only read, but follow the exercises and you'll be well on your way to finding the right job for you.
